West Side
How the streets run on the east and west side in NYC?
In New York City, can someone explain to me how the streets run? Specifically, from Midtown West and East, the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side, and then when the street number get into Harlem. Thank you.
Before the early 1800's the street grid in NYC was a mess, having evolved from almost 200 years without a plan. Then in 18111 the planning commission set a plan to normalize future growth and the streets above the then northern boundary of 14th street are much more regular, with the notable exception from earliewr times, Broadway. That street can actually be followed a couple of hundred miles up to Albany. Interestingly, the gridders laid out their plan with the east-west blocks longer because they thought that the city would be longer in that direction than north-south. Manhattan is thirteen and a half miles long an about two miles at its widest; they got that one wrong.
Above fourteenth street the numbers run consecutively pretty much with only the occasional anomaly. Often that is just a small area renamed like Central Park South which is contiguous with 59th street when not adjoining the Park. These blocks are short, fairly regularly spaced and fairly predictable at twenty to a mile. Fifth Ave is the dividing line between east and west side, at least as far as the numbering protocol goes.
The avenues that run north-south are a little less regular. They are generally much farther apart than the streets. Below 59th street they are consistently numbered with the exception of Broadway. And remember, we are talking about north of 14th street. Between there and the north end of the Park at 1110th street it gets a little crazy. The numbered avenues diasappear in favor of named. West from the park along 86th street, for example, you have Central Park West, Columbus, Amsterdam, Broadway, West End and then Riverside Drive, still usually following that grid.
Less than a mile above that the island narrows to about a mile or so wide. The avenues are not quite as regular, but the streets are. That is true all the way to the northern tip at about 225th street.
As far as neighborhoods go from 14th to about 34th street you are in Chelsea. From there to about 57th street you are in Clinton. This is a name substituted to soften the image of Hell's Kitchen, as it was formerly known. The area west of Central Park is known as the upper west side. The next area is Morningside Heights and is dominated by Columbia University. Then comes Sugar Hill.
Harlem encompasses these neighborhoods and by traditional definitions begins at 110th street. It then runs up to about 150th street or so where the elevation changes and the area becomes Washington Heights. The last mile or so of the island is called Inwood. Don't let the mere incantation of the word Harlem scare you. For the most part it is naot as sinister or scary as it once was.
