Vintage US Postcards

Has anyone read Robert Parker's novels? Do you feel that the characters are very shallow; one dimensional?

and have no depth? I just finished reading Spare Change and Brimstone. While I liked the plot of Brimstone and the setting (out West) there didn't seem to be much to the characters. Is this the 'norm' for detective/mystery genre? I also feel that when he describes a place it feels superficial. It's no more than looking at a postcard.

While Parker's descriptions are sparse, his characters and situations are hardly shallow or one-dimensional; what is unsaid in Parker's fiction is almost as important as what is said.
Parker's protagonists are for the most part men of action, who don't spend a lot of time talking about a situation, as much as dealing with it. They narrate the story, and provide a very effective demonstration of their character by what they tell, and how.
Parker writes for mature readers, who already are aware of genre stereotypes and conventions. His prose is cut to the bone for the benefit of the story.
Parker's style is very much his own in the mystery/thriller genre; for more description, analysis, or philosophical content, try reading some Raymond Chandler, or Ross Macdonald, Ed McBain, M.R. James, Elizabeth George or Laurie King, to name just a handful.
