Moline Illinois

September 21st, 2010 admin No comments

Moline, Illinois area. Other than Whitetail deer what other big game is available?

I may be relocating there, am curious as to what other game species are there; hogs, bear, coyotes etc...

Illinois doesn't have a lot of big game animals to be honest.

There are coyotes. There aren't any bear that I have heard of in the state. When I spoke to a DNR warden two years ago, i was told there were no breeding wild hog populations in the north central potion of the state (though I was 90% sure I saw 4 hogs standing together in the preserve I was deer hunting in). I have heard sketchy reports of wild hogs being in the state, but there is no mention of wild or feral pigs on the DNR website (guess there can't be too many then).

There is waterfowl and bird hunting in the vicinity of Moline. There are obviously small game hunting opportunities in the area as well.

I know IL has turkey hunting seasons, but to be honest, I am not very familiar with were the major turkey populations are. I honestly couldn't tell you if there are turkey in the Moline area, but from what I know of the area, my guess is that there are.

Just an FYI, if you plan in turkey deer hunting on public land, it isn't exactly easy in IL. You need to apply for a permit months in advance (usually April for fall deer, not sure about turkey). If you don't have a permit, you can go to the site and they have a drawing for slots where permit holders did not show up (or show up on time).

Be aware that a FOID card is required to possess firearms in the state of IL, even in your home. The Illinois State Police has a firearm unit and the laws are listed on the website. Review these laws and act accordingly. It is a felony to possess firearms without a FOID card if you are not except from the requirement.

Good Luck and congrats on becoming a Flatlander
