You will be fine. You should get out more. I think taking a trip to Hyde Park will be a good thing for you. Sounds like you need some diversity in your life if you're afraid to go into the area just because you're White. Hyde Park is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago. You'll see White, Black, Asian, Middle Eastern, etc. Just like when you go downtown. I take it you're not originally from Chicago (though the city as a whole is rather segregated).

I used to live in Hyde Park and I loved it. The best neighborhood I've ever lived in, in my opinion. I felt safe in the daytime and at night. I would say though, that the farther you are from Cottage Grove the better. I used to live on the east side of Hyde Park near the lake and it was great. If you're just going there for 1 day you'll definitely be fine. It's a very nice neighborhood and police are always patrolling the areas.

To get there from downtown, the fastest is to take the #6, which goes down state street. Also during rush hour the #2 goes to Hyde Park toward the areas west of Lake Park.
