where are the worst areas at night in KC? is 87th street safe off hw 435?
i hear prospect and troost are the WORST. i am new to kc and live off 435... off 87th street. i feel like it's kind of an iffy area, what do u all think? i know the next exit down is in the ghetto (bannister) bc there was a security guard standing there in front of the kmart and they had a closed down restaurant called golddiggers. lmao. so tell me what's up everyone!!! thanks! 10 points for best answer!!!
It took me a moment to realize you are talking about 435 East; I was thinking of 435 West & 87th Street (Lenexa), and I was like "what???" (I have a friend who lives in that area, and it's pretty safe).
If you're near the Bannister area, then from all accounts that I've hear, it's not the greatest area, but areas like Troost & Prospect in the lower numbered blocks are worse. While I don't go to T or P at night, I have driven in that area during the day, with no problems (I'm a white female, mid-twenties). Maybe it's my beat-up Ford Ranger, but I've never had a problem, lol. As for security guards, they're at practically every store nowdays, no matter what the area. My husband works at the Wal-Mart in Liberty, and there's always security there. While you're not in the prime area of KC real estate, I don't think you have to worry too much. Just do what I do, no matter where you are: Keep an eye on your surroundings, and keep distractions to a minimum. If you still feel skittish being out at night, take a self-defense class of some type.

I'm not talking about Karate or other Martial Arts. Self-defense classes are different than those--by a large margin. Self-defense isn't learning about how to "take out" your attacker--it's about learning how to be aware of your surroundings, being able to escape, and what to do if you can't readily escape.
