Municipal Pier
Pier fishing tomorrow night?
Im going to the SF municipal pier tomorrow night with the guys. I was wondering if anybody has any experience with this particular area. I currently have a 12lb line and thinking about using shrimp or chicken liver as bait. Any takers?
I fish bay area piers. In fact, I'll be back on one next Wednesday!
So, the chicken liver....hmm, never tried it. I can't really say what that would produce. I'm guessing, if anything, one of the numerous types of perch or a bullhead or maybe even smelt. That's just not a traditional bait out there. The shrimp, however, is something that's used. That can produce black, pile, or striped perch. There's even a possibility of getting a sanddab right now. They're usually there in some sort of decent numbers in the later winter, sometimes into early spring. There's always a chance.
If you want a chance at a rockfish, drop some squid, sardine, anchovy, or pile worm down near the pilings on the inside part of the pier.
If you have the chance, there will be halibut around there right now. Best bait I've seen are live smelt. You'll probably want a little heavier line though. Maybe 15lb.
If you're looking to take on bigger fish, then you're out gunned with only 12lb line. There are plenty of large rays in the bay right now. Last Saturday, I landed a 60lb ray off another pier. Before that, the group above me landed one in the 90lb range. Those fish are going to need line between 15-25lb to haul them in and resist abrasion from the pilings if they take you under. Leopard sharks are at the start of their spawning cycle right now. In the next few weeks it's going to blow wide open and there will be shark reports all over. Cut squid, cut sardine, cut anchovy....all produces sharks.
