Duck Boat Crash-How dangerous/fast/deep is the Delaware River?
From what one can see in the news it seem like a rather calm river. Is that river that dangerous two people are still allegedly missing?
The water appears calm, if the wind is calm, because the river is at sea level from Trenton. In times of heavy rain upstream, there will be more water flowing downstream. Every day the current changes. When the tides are rising, water flows upriver twice a day. The main channel is maintained at at least 40ft deep and the the most of rest of the river there is more than 30ft deep. The river bottom can be sandy, mucky mud, covered with old sunken pier wood, tree wood, trash, sunken boats, or tangles of cables and rope.
A small boat needs to stay clear and not linger in the main shipping lane. It is impossible for a tug & barge or ship to stop in a short distance, and there is limited close-in visibility from the ship. The Duck Boat tour take riders along the banks on the Philadelphia and Camden sides of the river. Unfortunately the Duck Boat stalled out in the shipping lane, which is close to the Philadelphia side of the river.
The scandal is that the tourist boat was 'dead in the water' for 20 minutes, while the barge was far down river, and Coast Guard, Marine Police, and others were nearby to render aid. Apparently the Duck Boat skipper called 'the boss' and not proper rescue agencies directly.
