How come masonic Temples And lodges always have there windows borded up or have metal bars on them.?

at least the ones iv seen anyway, like the one in my local town or the masonic temple in toronto canada. im like an hour away from toronto.

There are a couple of good reasons why this is the case in many areas.
1-Most other fraternal orders such as Elk, Moose, VFW, etc. serve alcohol. Many cities require that any place serving alcohol (other than restaurants) have no windows. While in the US and much of Canada alcohol is not allowed on Masonic property, it often still falls under the laws based on how they are written to include fraternal orders.
2- Money, windows require maintenance- maintenance costs money. We have other things we'd rather spend the cash on, like supplying a food bank or staffing a hospice.
3- Money, again. Windows let in/out hot or cold air, taxing our furnace and A/C systems.see above.
4- Windows need to be cleaned. It's a men's organization, 'nuff said.
5- Occupancy, Lodges are often vacant or unused for days, weeks, sometimes even months at a time. Windows are an invitation to vandals and burglars.

This is not the case everywhere. Many Masonic Lodges often have large picture windows or beautiful stained glass. It really depends more on the area the Lodge is located and the amount of use and care the building receives.
