Lodge Postcard
is 40 euros a day enough?
I'm going to travel Europe for 29 days (Paris, Amsterdam, all over Northern Germany, and 2 days in Zurich). My rail pass was 380 dollars and I'll be paying (on average) about $20/day for hostels. So after transportation and lodging, I'll have about $46/day (EU37,50) to play with. Is that reasonable or should I have more than that?
I only need money for food (i can go on one meal a day easily and many of the hostels i will be staying at offer breakfast), booze, partying, clubbing and of course sightseeing (I mostly want to see museums and churches). I don't intend on buying anything besides postcards and some small souvenirs for my friends.
I also welcome any tips on how to survive Europe on a budget.
To be honest I don't think it's enough at all, espeically in the countries/cities you mention which are not cheap.
e.g. $20 for Amsterdam for hostels? Have you booked already? If not then I suggest you check out the prices - of course it's depends when you are travelling because there is a lot more chance that you can get a $20 room off peak, but in the peak travelling season - pretty much no chance! e.g. I checked http://www.hostelworld.com/hostels/Amsterdam for a weekend in August and the only hostel below $40 a night is one which is so far out of Amsterdam that you really don't want to stay there!
At least for Amsterdam and Paris most tourist bank on the mark of $100 a day for food, travel within the city (which is not covered under the rail pass and you haven't accounted for), drinks & partying, and sightseeing
e.g. the cost of entering the Anne Frank museum is €8 and the Rijksmuseum is €12.50. So whilst most churches are free (or on a donation basis)
e.g. the entry cost for a nightclub is around the €10-15
e.g. price of a beer around the €3-5 mark and much higher in tourist based bars
So as you can see the entry then if you are interested in seeing museums and going out drinking & clubbing it is going to add up very quickly and you can make an estimation of what it will cost you based on how many museums/sights you want to see, how much you drink etc etc. Paris is going to be about the same and even more
As for tips
- well in Amsterdam at least you can walk or hire a bike which works out cheaper if you are seeing a lot of things.
- buy food in a supermarket rather than a restaurant and your budget will go further
- look for budget restaurants online in advance of travelling e.g. in Amsterdam De Blauwe Hollander or a Pancake house will give you a cheap & filling meal for around the €10 mark (if you are sick of supermarket food)
Hopefully this gives you a bit more insight and you can decide for yourself what your budget should be. You might be wise to place a question about the costs of Zurich and Paris in the respective travel sections there so locals/regulars can give you a bit more info. I would say so for Germany as well, but the info in that section is not so reliable.
