Williamsburg, Monticello, or Harpers Ferry - Which two should we visit?
We can visit two of these places during our vacation. Which two should we pick? Our kids are 14 and 16 years old. Which would be the most enjoyable and interesting for day-long trips?
I agree with the other answer. Definitely Williamsburg, and maybe Jamestown which is another settlement nearby which gets a lot less tourist traffic. And Monticello is a good choice because the city of Charlottesville is really beautiful and there's a lot to do there.
We personally like Harpers Ferry a lot but it's a quieter kind of historic park and possibly not that entertaining for teens. It depends on what sort of thing you like. A lot more exploring on your own and a lot less guided activity. There are also activities on the nearby river and some great but fairly strenuous hiking. Harpers Ferry was much coveted by both sides in the Civil War because of the heights overlooking the rivers, and there are trails going up to those heights. The John Brown wax museum and the whole history of John Brown's raid are interesting too.
