Guard Station
As far the Coast Guard, do future pilot ensigns get the chance to influence which Air Station they go to?
If, so do they make a list like the enlistment officers do while in basic training?
Based on the experience of a close friend of mine who retired from the CG as an aviator Commander (O-5), the answer is NO with one exception.
The exception is if you graduate from flight training as the number 1 or 2 in your class, you will be offered a choice of whatever aircraft type (e.g. C-130s, helos) is available for advanced training and based on that, you may get an opportunity to pick from a list of available CG Stations for your 1st assignment. Each CG Station has a specific Table of Organization (number of people by CG rating that are authorized by CG HQ for that station) which constrains the number of people and the type of skills that can be assigned. If the place you want to go to already has the maximum number of aviators for the type aircraft that you learn to fly, then you cannot be assigned there. You will have to go to a location that is short (often places like Adak AK).
Enlisted training and subseqent duty station assignments are significantly different than the process used for CG officers. There is no comparison.
The good note is, after you have been a CG Officer for about 10 -12 years, you will be higher in rank. Since the CG is a small service, you will get to know the aviator assignment detailers. Often, assignments for LCDR and above are made based on knowing someone at CG HQ to let you know when a billet opens in a desired location. This is especially true if you have several tough assignments to locations such as abroad CG cutters and cruisers, Adak, war zones, etc. People in this situations who spend a great deal of time away from home often get 1st choice of good shore Station billets.
