Crate Label
crate training my 1 year old chihuahua mix?
Okay so seeing as how my dog has separation anxiety problems from me, people have been telling me to crate train him. I was wondering if anyone could give me a helpful website to help along with this process.
but for people who dogs are crate trained, do they ever feel claustrophobic? Or ever get sad because they're in a tight area? I'm scared that the crate training could make my problems worse for my dog.
And last question is, my dog was sent out to me. Therefore he was in a plane. That is a crate right, what they put my dog in to get to me? I believe it is but just to make sure.
To make everything easier please label 1, 2, and 3 so I know which questions you are answering to. Thank you so much for all your help!

Have you ever watched "It's Me Or The Dog?" It is a show on Animal Planet" that is wonderful. The woman who does the show is from England, a wonderful dog trainer and often deals with separation anxiety. I have seen her help owners with TONS of times.
First off I'd suggest watching a few of the shows. You'll see how she deals with it first hand.
I personally don't like crate training & the woman who wrote "It's Me Or The Dog" doesn't use it that much either. We only crate our puppy at night for bed time and to keep him safe at night. He's 5mts & doesn't need the run of the house without us watching him.
From the show I've learned one thing is to not make your goodbyes & coming back a big deal. Don't fuss over your dog. I know it is hard not to, but that is one of the main things the trainer suggests.
Next if you can when you are home leave the room a few times for a short time, closing the door with the dog in it and return after a few minuets and don't make a big deal out of the coming and going. It just gets the dog use to you leaving and coming back.
Also when you are gone give your dog something to do. One dog training video I watched suggested those dog toys where you can put something inside it like food.

This should keep your dog busy for a few hours. Only give it to your dog when you leave as a treat.
Also if you don't like the idea of putting your dog in a crate while your are gone then don't.
We put our puppy in our master bathroom when we leave. We put his crate in there but it is open. His food, water, toys & special blankets are in there too. We clean up anything that is harmful for him, put locks on the cabinets so he can't accidentally open them and stuff like that. He also has his pee pad in there which he is trained to use.
Hope this helps.
